Social Media Musings from a Millennial

We’re here to help you keep your finger on the pulse of the ever-changing world of social media. Don’t miss the latest changes, updates and happenings on your favorite social media platforms.

Twitter’s effect on your brain. Twitter is conducting various studies to discover the power of tweets on people, and shared interesting findings this week on Medium. One study involved two groups of people watching the NCAA basketball tournament on television. In this study, one group could bring their phones and tweet and the other group was not permitted to use their phones. The results? The group that was allowed to tweet was more engaged. A different study measured brain waves with a headset to investigate the effect Twitter has on the brain. This study found that reading a Twitter timeline generated 64 percent more activity in the parts of the brain known to be active in emotion than normal Web use. Tweeting and retweeting increases that to 75 percent more than regular website browsing.

What’s your relevance? Facebook is giving advertisers a better feedback, and the company announced that advertisers would now see relevance scores in ad reporting tools. The company also noted that the higher an ad’s relevance score is, on a scale of 1 to 10, the cheaper it will be to deliver. While the relevance score shouldn’t be the guiding factor for advertising decision, it certainly is a metric to watch for content creation and audience targeting.

Google your Tweets. Twitter and Google renewed their agreement to show Tweets in Google results. The deal means that Twitter will have more opportunities to convert logged-out users. For Google, the deal means that search results will be enhanced by real-time access to tweets and more content.

GIF lovers, rejoice! GIFs are now viewable on TweetDeck. TweetDeck, which Twitter acquired in 2011, is a favorite of power users, offering sortable columns to more easily sift through different Twitter streams and lists. So, get your GIFs ready!

Twitter ads transcend platform. Twitter announced a deal this week with Flipboard and Yahoo! JAPAN to offer new ad solutions for brands. Through this new partnership, a brand could run a Promoted Tweet campaign on Twitter, with specific creative and targeting, and simultaneously run the campaign off Twitter, with the same targeting and creative in the Flipboard app. Because Flipboard already integrates organic Tweets into the app, the Promoted Tweet will have the same look and feel as the usual Flipboard experience.
