Great point re: associations. I agree re: treading carefully there and appreciate the further info on the structure and others with similar structures. Also really excellent, well done piece on penalties. Thought provoking. Thanks.

Interesting read and I like the marketer/communicator's perspective. I won't even get into nor defend the NFL (or Roger Goodell) with respect to this incident because their action leave much to be desired.

One small issue. The NFL is an association and a non-profit but just like the American Bar Association, American Medical Association, NRA, Sierra Club, NOW, etc. don't pay taxes as a non-profit, but the underlying teams pay income, sales, real property taxes just like the underlying doctors, lawyers, etc that belong to the ABA and AMA pay taxes. Now whether all said organizations/associations should be non-profit is an argument to bring up. But, I would be hesitant to call out punishment for a single organization because of policies with regards to employees of the group of employers of the association.

Here is also a well written article from a lawyer about the appropriateness of what penalties should be assessed. http://mmqb.si.com/2014/09/19/adrian-peterson-domestic-violence-nfl-league-discipline/

As a note, the MLB is not a nonprofit even though it works the same way as the NFL, they just decided it was easier to not put up with the hassle (mostly to disclose salaries) to be a non-profit.
