Social Media Musings from a Millennial

We’re here to help you keep your finger on the pulse of the ever-changing world of social media. Don’t miss the latest changes, updates and happenings on your favorite social media platforms.

Instagram purges spam accounts. Almost immediately after Instagram announced it passed 300 million monthly users, the photo- and video-sharing app also warned users that a purge was coming. The purge came as Instagram continues to weed out spam accounts. The biggest loser? Instagram itself. Instagram lost 29.4 percent of its followers, or 18,880,211 total followers.

Move over, FOMO. Here comes FOBO. According to a new study from Crowd DNA, 70 percent of people aged 13 through 24 said they have to be connected to the web, no matter where they are. Brands hoping to reach these connected consumers will need to tailor content to be more relevant and ensure sites and posts are optimized for mobile users on the go.

New Instagram filters. Instagram released an update to the app, introducing five new filters: Slumber, Crema, Ludwig, Aden and Perpetua. Additionally, a new feature is unveiled that allows users to add, hide and rearrange the filters in view when posting a picture.instagram filter

Measuring the top 100 brands. According to a Simply Measured survey, the top 100 global companies average 10 posts per week and 65 percent of the top brands post an average of five times per week or more. The study also says that photos account for 62 percent of all brand posts and are responsible for 77 percent of total engagement. The brands that saw the highest engagement per post were restaurants. Additionally, the most successful brands keep things short, with brand statuses between 75 and 175 characters and only 7 percent of updates containing more than 300 characters.
