Social Media Musings from a Millennial

We’re here to help you keep your finger on the pulse of the ever-changing world of social media. Don’t miss the latest changes, updates and happenings on your favorite social media platforms.

Coming soon: a new Twitter experience. Last week, Twitter hosted its first Analyst Day. The company spoke candidly about where Twitter is now and what’s next. Currently, Twitter has 284 million monthly active users, but 500 million other people consume content every month without logging in. To increase new user registration, new features will be unveiled in the near future. New features include an instantly curated timeline as soon as a new user signs up, timeline highlights and better direct messaging, video sharing and editing as well as alerts for breaking news.

Say thanks. Facebook unveiled a new way to reach out to your friends and family this holiday season: Say Thanks. To create a personalized Say Thanks video, users can visit facebook.com/thanks and select a friend. Users can then personalize the video by editing the theme, photos and posts. The finished video will post to the creator’s timeline, with the friend tagged so it will appear on his or her timeline as well.

Pinterest: Not just for women. Since the early days of the site, Pinterest has been geared towards women. However company representatives announced that in the last year, Pinterest has doubled its male user base and men now compose a third of new sign-ups. Another fact that caught our attention: More men use Pinterest than read GQ and Sports Illustrated combined.

Facebook: The newest productivity tool? Facebook will introduce a new collaboration product, Facebook At Work. The platform will allow users to create work accounts to “chat with colleagues, connect with professional contacts and collaborate over documents” separately from a personal account. The new FB@Work platform will compete with offerings such as Google Drive and Microsoft Office suite.

Cutting down on promotional content in the News Feed. Facebook announced that overly promotional page posts will not make an appearance in the News Feed. Promotional posts are defined as posts that solely push people to buy a product or install an application, posts that push people to enter promotions and sweepstakes with no real context and posts that reuse the exact same content from ads.

What do you think about the new updates? We’d love to hear from you! Leave a comment below or reach out on Twitter, @carolaskyn or @rosecomm.
